2013 Bardahl Championship Series
4th Annual ESU Banquet is in the Books
The 4th annual awards banquet was held on Saturday at the Great American Casino in Tukwila, the site of the three previous banquets, Thanks to the efforts of Henry Marvin and the support of the casino staff, the sumptuous menu of salmon, prime rib, salads and sides again provided a great meal together with good fellowship for the 45 people in attendance. The dessert bar provided by Teri Campbell was the best yet, featuring cheese cakes, cookies and other treats.
Following the meal, the attendees were treated with a presentation by Jon Zimmerman, driver of the U-9 unlimited hydroplane, who shared his thoughts on growing up with boats, and what he has done through the years prior to sitting in the cockpit of an unlimited. He was able to field questions from the audience and provided thoughtful and insightful answers to the many questions.
After Jon’s concluding comments, hydroplane legend Chip Hanauer took the podium and wowed everyone with his memories of races past, and a review of his career in the big boats, including retiring twice only to be wooed back to give it another go. He shared his memories of the owners he drove for, and holds especially high regard for Fran Muncey and her dedication to her team. Chip also hopped on his soapbox and shared his thoughts on what the future of unlimited race could, and maybe should be. The only disappointment from his discussion came when he was finished and sat down. All in all the two speakers were a great addition to the evening.
Following the speakers, the award presentation commenced. In addition to the top boat and driver awards, a special drawing for the dozen prints provided by hydroplane artist Alan Ameel was held. Mr. Ameel will also be a supported of ESU for the coming season, and the club thanks him for his support.
Special thanks were also offered to the club sponsors. Their support has been tremendous and has allowed the club to provide the accessories that make the race day events even more meaningful. Recognition was given to the Bardahl Corporation, represented by Mark Manchester, the Red Dot Corporation represented by Gary Hanson, and the support of club member Terry Harmer. The McKeon family was thanked for their faithful work on race days by bringing and setting up equipment and the course. The inaugural Joanna Vandenakker award for outstanding service to the club was presented to Marc Gran.
Thanks go to all how helped make the 2013 season a success. The banquet concluded the 2013 season, but the future looks bright for an even better 2014 season.
